Essentials for Bhutan Holiday
PACKING CHECKLIST:
Weather/ Climate The central valleys of Punakha, Wangdiphodrang, Mongar, Trashigang and Lhunsthi enjoy a semi tropical climate with warm summers and mild winters, while Thimphu, Paro, Tongsa and Bumthang have pleasant summers and very cold winter (snowfall take place often). The east of Bhutan is generally a little warmer than the west of the country. The southern low-altitude belt is tropical, with hot summers and pleasant winters.
Clothing:
Travelling in the mountains means that you can experience a wide range of temperatures in any one day. During the day it can be quite warm whereas night-time temperatures can drop dramatically. Crossing over a pass requires an extra layer of clothing just for an hour or two. It is better to plan to layer your clothing rather than bringing too many bulky warm clothes. Long sleeves are advisable since the sun is very strong and, similarly, a hat is recommended. A small face mask is suggested on long drives since the roads can get quite dusty, depending on the season.
Bhutanese is conservative in their dress and local do get offended by the sight of tourists wearing skimpy or tight-fitting clothes. Shorts and vests are not advisable at any time but they must not be worn on visits to monasteries, dzongs (Fort) and other religious institutions. Hats must be removed before entering the above-mentioned places.
Clothing:
- Pair of comfortable shoe of your choice if you are not trekking
- Cotton socks and woolen socks
- Underwear
- Thermal underwear
- Field shirts & long-sleeved (Sun is very strong so it’s good to wear full sleeved shirt)
- Trouser (technical if possible)
- T-Shirts
- Micro Fleece or warm fleece Warm pajamas for overnight
- Lightweight hooded rain Jacket
- Warm hat and Gloves (2 pairs in case you lose)
- Sun hat that covers your neck
- Warm gloves
- Scarf or Buff – for warmth and sometime works to protect against cold wind or dust
Clothing (If you are Trekking)
- Pair of walking boots for trekking with spare laces
- Down Jacket if you are trekking in high altitude or if you are traveling (Nov—April)
- Trekking trouser (technical if possible)
Sundries & Miscellaneous:
- Daypack ( approx. 2500-3000cubic inches )
- Always carry your passport, Tibet visa copy (original copy), some copy of pp size photo)
- Sunglasses with high UV protection or if you wear prescription glass (carry extra pair as it can easily break or lose)
- Small thermos for tea/hot water (optional)
- Hot Bag to keep your bed warm(best medicine when you are trekking or traveling in remote area)
- We recommend to carry water proof duffel bag for your main luggage for such adventure tour and long overland drive.
- Watch
- Water bottle 1-2 liters if you are trekking or traveling to remote area
- Any prescription medications you require including malaria pills, if applicable
- Protein bars, chocolate, dried fruit or other snacks of your choice if you are traveling in remote area
- Trail map and Guide book (some of the guides books are not allowed in Tibet)
- Chips stick or Lip guard
- Umbrella
Sundries & Miscellaneous (If you are Trekking)
- Flash light with battery backup if you are trekking or traveling in remote area
- Small bag or plastic for dirty clothes
- Water bottle 1-2 liters if you are trekking or traveling to remote area
- Inflatable pillow (optional) every tea houses will have pillow
- Good quality sleeping bag of 4 season if you are trekking or traveling in remote area
- Pocket knife
- Insect repellent
- Travel wash – 100% biodegradable
- Hand warmer
- Gaiter (optional)
- Walking poles if you are trekking
- Water purification tablet if you are trekking enough for the duration
- Repair kit – needle, thread, safety pins, and small pair of scissor
- Umbrella

Medical Kits:
- Personal medicine or antibiotics (please share your medical history and any condition with BATE team)
- Paracetamol, aspirin or similar what you prefer
- Antiseptic cream
- Sun cream good quality
- Lip salve (zinc blocks are good for burnt lips)
- Insect repellent
- Anti blister plasters
- Doralie rehydration powders (please do ensure you have enough for whole time)

Luggage to bring
For any trekking or adventure holiday, we recommend you to carry wheeled duffle bag and day pack, BATE supply semi water proof trekking kit bag during the trekking who sometime carried by porter/donkey/yak. You can leave your duffle bag safely in hotel store room with unnecessary items. However, if you are not trekking, you will be using your own bag throughout the trip.
Equipment rental:
If you are traveling to Bhutan from Nepal. You can buy or rent almost every trekking equipment in Kathmandu in reasonably fair price. There are branded shops, local trekking gears shops as per your budget. BATE will be happy to recommend any some of the reliable trekking gear shops. However, if you are traveling to Lhasa from China mainland, you can only buy most of the trekking gears. BATE offer good quality, clean gears on rent such as down jackets, sleeping bag and walking poles. Please contact BATE TEAM for further information.
