My name is Giulia Witcombe and I have wanted to explore the enchanting landscapes and culture of Nepal since I was six years old. This finally materialized in October 2023.
Arriving in Kathmandu, I dedicated several days to exploring the city’s iconic world heritage sites, temples, palaces, and bustling markets. Each location whispered tales of history through the ancient architecture and exquisite craftsmanship. Serendipitously, I even had the extraordinary privilege of witnessing the living Goddess Kumari.
Eager to experience Nepal’s natural splendor, I ventured into the lofty mountains, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries. Beginning in Pokhara, I made my way around the Annapurna conservation area then headed to Chitwan excited to see elephants. Chitwan did not disappoint and I got to see bears, rhinoceros, birds, crocodiles, snakes and my favourite – elephants!
Returning to Kathmandu, I had the opportunity experience the joyous celebrations of Dashain with a local Nepalese friend. Delighting in the rich tapestry of local cuisine, I tried such delights such as Haluwa Swari, Bara, Chatamari, Dal Bhat, Momos, and some delectable Indian sweets. Immersing in the festivities, I engaged with local traditions, observed rituals, and forged meaningful connections with the residents, adding a profound layer to my overall experience.
While in Kathmandu I also visited a local art gallery where I had the privilege of meeting both established and emerging Nepali artists. This encounter provided deeper insight into the vibrant artistic scene of Nepal.
My time in Nepal was not only marked by awe-inspiring landscapes but also by the warmth and hospitality of the people.
